It is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan that is bordered on the north by 135th Street, on the south by 122nd and 125th Streets, on the west by Hudson River, and on the east by Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. and City College. Manhattanville is also known as West Harlem, West Central Harlem, and West Central Harlem.
Throughout the nineteenth century, Manhattanville was centered on a pier that served as a hub for ferry service and everyday river transportation. As the first station on the Hudson River Railroad extending north from the city, it was also the hub of daily stage coach, omnibus and streetcar routes. It was decommissioned in 1997. Even though it was located near Bloomingdale Road and boasted a number of hotels, places of entertainment, and even its own post office, it was also an important industrial entry point for construction materials and other freight bound for Upper Manhattan because of its close proximity to the Hudson River.
In response to the construction of road and railway viaducts over the valley in which the town was located, Manhattanville, which was becoming rapidly incorporated into the rising city, was reduced to the status of a marginalized industrial region. After a substantial projected expansion of Columbia University, which already has campuses in Morningside Heights to the south and Washington Heights to the north, the neighborhood became a focus of attention in the early twenty-first century.
Manhattanville is a smaller neighborhood where you’ll discover a mix of industrial and residential moods mixed in with residential neighborhoods. The growth of Columbia University into Manhattanville has unquestionably impacted the neighborhood and has played a significant role in its gentrification, to name a few effects. West Harlem Piers Park and Riverside Park are two fantastic parks that you’ll have access to while you’re here. Near the Hudson River, you can go fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoy being outside.
Manhattanville, which is bordered by the Hudson River, is home to the General Grant National Memorial, which is located in spacious Riverside Park, as well as the popular West Harlem Piers, which offer fishing, a canoe/kayak boat launch, and special events. New York City’s Manhattanville neighborhood is home to the Harlem Stage, which dates back to 1890 and includes regular performances by performers of color. It is also the location of the City College of New York and the adjacent St. Nicholas Park, among other things.
