Manhattan’s Midtown Central Business District is the world’s largest central business district and spans several neighborhoods on the east and west sides of the island, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike for a variety of activities. A large number of prominent corporations, as well as the United Nations Headquarters, have their headquarters here. The neighborhood contains a large number of residential and commercial buildings, but it also includes popular attractions such as Times Square, the Broadway Theatre District, the Garment District, Koreatown, Hell’s Kitchen, and others, among others. Busy Downtown Manhattan is home to iconic attractions such as Times Square and the Museum of Modern Art, as well as architectural landmarks such as the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, the Flatiron Building, and the Empire State Building. Midtown Manhattan also contains the World Trade Center site and the World Trade Center Memorial. Concerts are staged at venues such as Radio City Music Hall in Rockefeller Center and Madison Square Garden, which serves as the home of the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers, among other locations.
A large number of New York City’s skyscrapers, including the city’s highest hotels and apartment towers, may be found in the Midtown neighborhood. Although the northern limit of Midtown Manhattan is widely identified as 59th Street, the southern boundary is less obvious, with variably defined boundaries such as 34th Street, 23rd Street, and even 14th Street. Midtown stretches over the entire island of Manhattan along an east–west axis, and is bordered on the east by the East River and on the west by the Hudson River. According to the Encyclopedia of New York City, Midtown encompasses the area between 34th Street and 59th Street, as well as the area between 3rd Avenue and 8th Avenue.
The Midtown Manhattan area includes various areas in addition to the central business district, including Hell’s Kitchen and Chelsea on the West Side, and Murray Hill on the East Side as well as the communities of Kips Bay, Turtle Bay, and Gramercy Park. Midtown is sometimes subdivided into “Midtown East” and “Midtown West,” or north and south, as in the Midtown North and Midtown South precincts of the New York City Police Department, respectively.
