New York City’s West Village is a neighborhood that is part of the greater Greenwich Village district in Lower Manhattan. It is a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. On a conventional map of New York, the West Village’s limits are as follows: to the west, West 14th Street to the north, Greenwich Avenue to the east, and Christopher Street to the south. West 14th Street is the traditional northern boundary of the West Village. Various other common conceptions have stretched the southern boundary as far south as Houston Street, while some have defined the eastern limit as being along Seventh Avenue or the Avenue of the Americas. The Far West Village is comprised of the area between Gansevoort Street and Leroy Street that stretches from the Hudson River to Hudson Street.
Chelsea is to the north, the South Village and Hudson Square to the south, and the Washington Square district of Greenwich Village to the east. Other nearby neighborhoods include the Chelsea neighborhood. Located in Manhattan Community District 2, the West Village is guarded by the 6th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. Beginning in the early 1980s, residential construction grew throughout the Far West Village, which encompassed the region between West Street and Hudson Street and ran from West 14th Street to West Houston Street. As a result, the neighborhood was granted its own name, Far West Village.
The West Village, with its fancy boutiques and chic eateries, is a popular destination for fashionable people. Streets surrounded with Federal-style townhouses and public squares, some of which are still cobblestoned, make up this charming neighborhood. Notable locations include the Village Vanguard jazz club and the Stonewall Inn bar, which was the site of the 1969 riots that ushered in the homosexual rights movement in the United States. Piano bars, cabarets, and theatre can all be found in this traditionally artistic neighborhood.
